A small U.S. shipping company can be worth starting when it has disciplined lane selection, enough working capital, and rates that cover empty miles. In the one-truck model used here, a healthy target is $24,000–$30,000 in monthly revenue with an operating margin of about 8%–15% after paying a market-rate driver wage.
For financial planning, “shipping company” is treated here as an independent, for-hire interstate motor carrier operating one Class 8 tractor and a dry-van trailer. A freight brokerage, courier fleet, ocean forwarder, and parcel-delivery operation have very different capital and compliance structures. This distinction matters: the truck carrier owns or finances the asset, carries the fuel and repair risk, and gets paid only when the asset moves freight.
Demand is real, but demand alone does not make the economics easy. The U.S. Department of Transportation’s freight indicators show that freight activity moves with the business cycle rather than rising smoothly. The practical conclusion is simple: do not underwrite the business on a peak spot-rate month. Build it to survive a soft quarter.

The winning edge is rarely “more miles.” It is better freight density: two or three repeat lanes, fewer empty repositioning miles, and customers that pay accessorials without a fight. A truck running 9,000 disciplined miles can outperform one running 12,000 chaotic miles.

The most important number is not the quoted rate per loaded mile. It is revenue per total mile after deadhead. The American Transportation Research Institute reported an average truck operating cost of $2.260 per mile in 2024 in its 2025 operational-cost update. A startup should therefore be very cautious about any lane that produces less than roughly $2.30 per total mile before a profit cushion.
At 12% deadhead, the truck is loaded for 88% of its miles. To produce $2.30 per total mile, the required loaded-mile revenue is $2.30 ÷ 0.88 = $2.61 per loaded mile. To produce a safer $2.55 per total mile, the quote needs to average about $2.90 per loaded mile, including fuel surcharge and accessorial revenue.
Here is the non-obvious part: a $2.75 load can be worse than a $2.55 load. If the first requires 170 empty miles and a two-hour detention delay, while the second keeps the truck in a dense reload market, the lower sticker rate may produce more cash per driver day. Evaluate revenue per total mile, revenue per on-duty hour, and the probability of the next reload together.
Quote from the next reload backward. A lane into a weak outbound market deserves a higher inbound rate because the carrier will pay for the imbalance later. The spreadsheet should carry a lane-level deadhead assumption, not one companywide average pasted across every load.
Startup capital03How Much Capital Does a One-Truck Shipping Company Need?
That is a realistic planning range for an independent one-truck interstate carrier using a financed or used tractor, a dry-van trailer, required compliance setup, insurance deposits, and 60–90 days of working capital. A new tractor-and-trailer combination bought mostly with cash can push total capital toward $250,000–$400,000.
The federal operating-authority fee itself is not the expensive part. FMCSA lists a $300 one-time fee for each operating authority in its operating-authority fee guidance. The real startup bill is the asset, insurance deposit, deferred maintenance, and the gap between paying fuel today and collecting freight invoices weeks later.

New interstate carriers enter an 18-month New Entrant period. FMCSA says the safety audit is conducted within 12 months after operations begin in its New Entrant Program guidance. That means compliance is not an opening-day checklist that gets filed away. Driver qualification, hours of service, vehicle maintenance, drug and alcohol testing, and accident records are part of the financial model because a failed audit can stop revenue entirely.
Do not “activate authority and then find freight.” Before activation, have a written lane thesis, at least 20 target shipper or broker contacts, a rate floor, a bad-debt policy, and a daily dispatch scorecard. Authority age is only useful if the company survives long enough to build it.

Those rate ranges are explicit planning assumptions, not published national averages. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported a $57,440 median annual wage for heavy and tractor-trailer truck drivers in May 2024 in its truck-driver occupational profile. Treat that wage as the value of the owner’s driving labor. Business profit should be measured only after charging the company for that labor.

Owner economic earnings equal market-value driving compensation plus residual business profit. That is not the same as an unrestricted draw. Taxes, major-repair reserves, working-capital growth, deductibles, and future equipment replacement still come out before the owner can safely spend the money.
Pay yourself two checks in the model: one for driving and one for ownership. If the ownership check disappears after a fair driver wage, the company has created a job, not an investment. That may still be worthwhile—but it is a different decision.

$7,200 ÷ 39.5% = $18,228 of monthly revenue. At $2.89 revenue per loaded mile and $1.75 of variable cost per loaded mile, contribution is about $1.14 per loaded mile. The truck therefore needs roughly 6,300 loaded miles, or about 7,200 total miles at 12% deadhead, to pay all costs including a market wage for the owner-driver.
There is also a lower cash break-even if the owner temporarily takes less than a market wage. That number can keep the checking account positive, but it should not be mistaken for a sustainable business. The first milestone is not maximum miles. It is four consecutive weeks above the all-mile rate floor with deadhead under 12%, invoices submitted within 24 hours, and no preventable service failures. Scale only after that pattern is repeatable.

Because the company pays fuel, tolls, payroll, insurance, and repairs before it collects the freight bill.
