The demand case is credible. The RV Industry Association’s 2025 owner profile reports 8.1 million U.S. households owning an RV, median annual use of 30 days, and 36% of owners being first-time buyers. More use means more appliance failures, electrical faults, water-system leaks, slide problems, generator issues, inspections, winterization, and on-site troubleshooting.
Still, a large installed base does not automatically create a good business. This is a mobile skilled-trade model, not a generic handyman route. The owner must diagnose seven interlocking systems, price uncertainty, carry the right parts, document warranty work, and collect payment while standing in a campground or driveway. Technical competence gets you invited once. Accurate arrival windows, clean estimates, and first-visit completion earn the second call.
The honest verdict: it is attractive for a technically strong owner who likes field work and can operate inside a compact territory. It is much less attractive for someone planning to hire all labor immediately, cover a 70-mile radius, and compete only on hourly price. The business earns its margin by selling convenience plus diagnosis, not by being the cheapest mechanic in the county.
Do not start by advertising every repair you could theoretically perform. Start with a profitable service menu you can complete from stocked inventory—electrical diagnosis, appliance repair, plumbing leaks, roof and seal work, inspections, winterization, and common component replacement—then add specialties as your tools and certifications catch up.

The wrong answer is “jobs.” A $180 thermostat replacement 45 miles away can be less valuable than a $450 electrical diagnostic five miles from the prior appointment. The real revenue unit is a service call with recovered travel, billable diagnostic time, labor, and parts margin.
Established shops often use flat-rate task times rather than charging only for elapsed clock time. The RVDA Service Management Guide includes average work-unit times for common service functions. A mobile operator can use those guides as a pricing reference, then add a separate dispatch structure that reflects travel and setup.
Base case used in this article: $115 dispatch + 1.9 hours × $165 + $82.50 parts gross profit − $34 card/consumable cost ≈ $477 contribution per call before monthly fixed overhead.
That call-level number lets you judge work before accepting it. Suppose an appointment contributes $491 and consumes 2.9 hours including travel, setup, diagnosis, repair, payment, and notes. It produces about $169 of contribution per field hour. If the same job consumes 4.5 hours because it sits outside the route, contribution drops to $109 per field hour even though the customer invoice is unchanged.
This is a practical owner-operator capacity band when calls involve diagnosis, parts handling, documentation, and 20–45 minutes of travel. Three or four daily calls are possible only when they are short, pre-diagnosed, and geographically clustered.
Capacity is constrained by field hours, not calendar slots
An eight-hour day rarely produces eight billable hours. A healthy planning target is 3.0–4.5 billed labor hours per service day, plus dispatch revenue and parts margin. A clean quote should separate the dispatch fee, diagnostic authorization, labor rate or flat-rate units, parts policy, freight, and taxes. This is not merely customer service. It protects the model. When every invoice mixes travel, labor, and parts into one number, you cannot see which calls are producing contribution and which are merely producing cash receipts.

A practical policy has a core zone covered by the standard dispatch fee, a second zone with a surcharge, and an outer zone priced case by case. Campground days can be scheduled as route blocks: one destination, multiple coaches, one parts run. The upside scenario assumes support capacity—part-time help, an apprentice, or office assistance—inside the higher overhead. It also assumes the owner still performs productive work. A manager-run model with two hired technicians has different economics because payroll replaces much of the owner’s labor contribution.
A solo owner can produce a strong income because the same person earns the technician wage, the service markup, and the equity return. When the owner stops turning wrenches, the business must replace those billable hours before it can preserve the same draw.

The largest risks are not exotic. They are underpriced travel, repeated diagnostic visits, weak documentation, an overbought vehicle, uncollected warranty work, and a callback rate that consumes the owner’s best hours. The RV service labor market is not deep. The RV Industry Association reported more than 7,500 certified technicians nationwide and nearly 1,000 dealerships employing at least one certified technician in its 2025 annual-report summary.
